Research conducted by Prof. Yael Latzer, Prof. Ruth Katz, and Zohar Spivak of the Faculty of Social Welfare and Health Studies Haifa University to test the effects of two factors on the development of eating disorders in adolescents. The study involved as many as 248 women aged 12-19 (average age: 14.8). They were asked to convey any information about the common practice when using the internet and watching television. Regarding the latter, they were asked to provide a number of popular events related to extreme standards of physical images.
Furthermore, also asked to fill out a questionnaire that tested their approach to issues related to slimming, bulimia satisfaction, physical or dissatisfaction, their general outlook on food, and their feelings about personal empowerment.
The results showed, the longer it spends more time on the Facebook page, they can suffer from bulimia, anorexia, physical dissatisfaction, negative self-image, negative approach to eating and more interested in performing weight-loss diet.
Extensive online exposure to fashion and music content showed a similar trend, but is manifested in fewer types of eating disorders. Thus, the more exposure to fashion content on the internet, the higher chance of a girl affected by anorexia.
Similar study conducted earlier which found that the effects of watching television gossip shows impressions can also cause eating disorders in young women, especially teenagers.
